Top Touring Shows for Tots – Win A FAMILY TICKET TO PEPPA PIG LIVE
Chances are you won’t come close to loving your kid’s favourite characters as much as they do, you may actually harbour some slight resentment towards these colourful little creatures but the great things about kid’s stage shows, especially those adapted from HUGELY popular television shows and books, is that tots adore them, their excitement is almost OTT. Too much!
And from an adult’s point of view going to the theatre can be a good reason for a city break, bundle all your tots on the train or in the car and head off to explore somewhere new. So whether you’re into Gruffalos, nocturnal garden dwellers or the cutest bacon in town here’s some of the best shows hitting the stage.
PEPPA PIG’S SURPRISE – & YOUR CHANCE TO WIN A FAMILY TICKET
Peppa Pig must be one exhausted wee porker. She puts Taylor Swift to shame in terms of workload – as well as starring in her own TV show, signing off the toy production and making all those DVDS she’s currently on tour across the UK and Ireland. She’s an old hand (trotter) as ‘Peppa Pig’s Surprise’ is in fact her fourth tour.
So, what’s she got to say for herself? Well according to my inside piggie information this is what’s going down. Mummy Pig and Daddy Pig have got a lovely surprise for Peppa and her little brother George but no matter how hard they try, they cannot guess what it is. Interactive fun, games and, of course, surprises help the audience get to the bottom of this mystery. Well the anticipation is killing me for sure.
This fourth tour features new songs and life-size puppets. The show is travelling extensively – I told you she worked hard – there are so many dates, towns and cities available so Peppa is truly getting around. I wonder what’s on her rider? [Peppa is touring NOW. If I wasn’t going to the show in my hometown of Aberdeen (obvs) then I’d be tempted by the performance in York, how young is too young to take a youngster to Betty’s Cafe Tea Rooms?]
IN THE NIGHT GARDEN LIVE
If your cherub is more a nocturnal dude/dudette then In the Night Garden LIVE may leave them breathless in anticipation.
The green-fingered stars of the small screen don’t perform in any ordinary theatre, oh no, they strut the boards in a ‘showdome’ no less. The attraction of this purpose built dome is that it’s very intimate, only 13 rows of seats, so the magic of Upsy Daisy, Iggle Piggle and friends is truly up close and personal. It will be mesmerising.
According to my sources there are two different shows to choose from with different stories. In the Ninky Nonk show, Iggle Piggle loses his blanket and his friends help him find it. In the Pinky Ponk show, Makka Pakka washes everyone’s faces, until his sponge gets stuck in Upsy Daisy’s megaphone. Now I can’t speak for everyone but I wouldn’t want a sponge stuck in my megaphone so I’d probably have to go to see that story to find out how the situation is resolved, but alternatively the drama of blanket loss is also a huge draw for me and promises to be quite an emotional experience.
When you buy your tickets you can also add ‘Goody Bag’ and ‘Meet a Character’ extras if you wish. The Live show has two planned stints in London (26 May-11 June 2016, then 18 June – 2 July 2016), then it moves onto Birmingham (9-23 July 2016), followed by Manchester (30 July-20 August 2016). Each performance lasts just under an hour, perfect for a tot’s attention span.
[Birmingham is the city for me as I’m long overdue a return to the jewellery quarter to find a piece of unique, creative, modern silverware at a reasonable price. These trips aren’t just about the tots.]
THE GRUFFALO’S CHILD LIVE
And lastly, my third recommendation is another classic. The Gruffalo’s Child Live is currently touring and promises more creatures great and small, and furry, and wild and wonderful.
The story goes that the wee Gruffalo ignores her father’s warning about venturing into the deep, dark wood alone. Foolhardy she tiptoes into the snow but will she be confronted by the mythical Big, Bad Mouse? That’s quite a question. I have a bit of an issue with rodents so a Big Mouse is bad enough, a Big Bad Mouse is petrifying, I’ll be quaking in my shoes and hiding behind Mr Toddler. How exhilarating.
The Gruffalo’s Child Live is touring NOW till 4 September 2016 with multiple stops across England, Scotland (Glasgow, Lanark and Hamilton) and Wales (Cardiff, Llandudno). Again it’s a great length of performance for children running at 55 minutes with no interval.
[If I wasn’t tempted by the proximity of a Scottish gig then what a lovely excuse for a break in Bath – the Bath performance runs from 8-13 March 2016. If I could find time to walk round the architecture and streets that once inspired Jane Austen I’d be a happy bunny.]
