Peppa Pig’s Surprise – Review
Just a quick review of Peppa Pig’s Surprise which Tots2Travel saw at Aberdeen’s His Majesty’s Theatre this morning.
The stalls, dress circle and upper circle were absolutely packed with enthusiastic children. It was Mr Toddler’s first theatre experience and I didn’t know whether it would be memorable in a good way or in a ‘never again’ way, but the minute the house lights dimmed, the curtain rose and the Peppa Pig narrator’s voice boomed out over the audience he was absolutely mesmerised.
The Peppa puppets were cute as a button and the performers operating them did a really physical job, smiling all the time with boundless enthusiasm. The main human character, Daisy (played by Emma Grace Arends), was also a ball of energy and kept the audience engaged. Peppa and her chums played hide and seek, had a bath (quite cute seeing baby pigs in a bath) and -spoiler alert- got up bright and early for a surprise trip to the seaside. The story was interactive, lots of waving, pointing, singing and dancing, as well as full of bubbles and water. My favourite scene was the rockpool animal piece so look out for that. Mr Toddler genuinely seemed in awe throughout the entire show.
When the curtain fell I classed the whole outing as a success until we left the theatre and I refused to buy a Peppa balloon in the foyer – TOTAL MELTDOWN.
The performance, props, narrative and interactivity get five stars. There’s still a lot of performances to go as the tour runs till November 2016 so check out if it’s coming to a location near you. There’s still one more show in Aberdeen tomorrow Thursday 7 July as well.
