Forest Adventures – BBC Radio Scotland’s ‘Out for the Weekend’
Hello! As we’re starting to feel the nip of autumn in the air Fiona Stalker and I decided to talk Forest Adventures with kids for the latest ‘Out for the Weekend’ show. There are a lot of fun dates for the diary which are hard to remember or note down when you’re listening to the radio (and probably doing something else as well, especially if you’re a parent!) so here’s all the info for you. Listen again here at 50’30.
It’s time to go down to the woods today…
BIG TREE COUNTRY – Perthshire is known as Big Tree Country so it’s the ultimate destination for little woodland explorers. Find out more here. Look out for the Fortingall Yew (one of the oldest living things in Europe – approx 5000 years old), the Birnam Oak (inspired Shakespeare when writing Macbeth is around 500 years old) and the Young Pretender (a sycamore which is only a mere 300 years old).
RANGER LED ACTIVITIES for little ones – The National Trust for Scotland’s NATURE NIPPERS team is holding regular forest adventures across Scotland. Find out how we rated it here. Upcoming dates include – Crathes Castle, Aberdeenshire – 4th October – explore autumn colours and seasonal crafts/Inveresk, Musselborough- 6th October – Garden Senses – Smells and Sounds in the Garden/Malleny Gardens nr Edinburgh – Friday 7th October Autumn Bug Hunt/House of Dun nr Montrose – 15th October – Ready for Winter – Make snug little houses out of natural materials for woodland animals. And Crathes Castle on Royal Deeside is holding a guided children’s squirrel walk on Tuesday 18 October 2016.
ART & HISTORY IN THE FOREST – The Forestry Commission has been good at encouraging art and sculptures on its land, just another thing to attract you into the woods to engage and potentially inspire children. Examples include Feshiebridge‘s Frank Bruce Sculpture Trail (south of Aviemore), Tyrebagger Sculpture Trail just outside Aberdeen and Loch Ard Family Sculpture Trail nr Aberfoyle.
On a separate note the NTS’ Castle Fraser is hosting a nature’s version of Art Attack with the Big Hedgehog Draw on Tuesday 11 October 2016.
LIGHT UP THE FOREST – there are lots of organised forest and garden illuminations in Scotland. The big ones are the Enchanted Forest in Perthshire (29th September – 30th October 2016), Colours of Cluny in Forres (9-20th November 2016) and Botanic Lights in Edinburgh (13th October – 6th November 2016).
What am I doing this October holidays?
TREAT YOURSELF IN THE FOREST – We’re going for a log cabin experience, a bit of luxury right in the heart of the forest, with a hot tub at our disposal. We’re heading to Strathyre and will report back soon!
When the programme’s available to listen again on Iplayer I’ll attach the link.
